Dona Ana, NM, February 11, 2014 – The Doña Ana County Detention Center announced that the facility will work in conjunction with Legacy Inmate Communications to introduce a remote video visitation system at the Detention Center.  This service will make visiting detained individuals easier and more accessible for friends and family.  Legacy is a nationwide provider of Inmate Communication Services and has been providing the Detention Center with inmate telephone service and on-site video visitation services since December 2013.

Following over a thousand successful on-site video visits at the Detention Center, Warden Christopher Barela has worked closely with Legacy to insure that friends and family of detained persons have even more opportunity to stay in communication with loved ones. Warden Barela says, “The convenience of visits from home, a place where all family members can visit, will have a calming, positive effect on inmate behavior.  This is always welcomed.”

Benefits of Remote Video Visitation

Remote video visitation allows friends and family to have a video visit with an inmate from the privacy and comforts of their home.  The service is similar to video conferencing programs people use every day, but it is specially designed for the correctional environment, with secure video monitoring, pre-scheduled visit time allocations and the ability for the Detention Center to easily store, recall and review individual visits.

President and CEO of Legacy, Curtis Brown, says “Our team has worked hard to develop a remote video visitation system that gives inmates and their loved ones the opportunity to communicate over a secure network, from the privacy of home. We’ve coupled this convenience with the best investigative features our company has to offer. We’re confident that this type of remote visitation will be the future of inmate communications, and we are excited to work with Warden Barela in bringing this great new service to Doña Ana."

Remote video visitation at the Detention Center comes with a number of benefits: increased visits between inmates and loved ones (especially with small children) which studies have shown results in a reduction in recidivism, the potential to decrease wait times for on-site visits, as well as the elimination of time and expenses for families traveling to and from the Detention Center.

Doña Ana expects to begin offering remote video visitation service to the public on February 11, 2014. Warden Barela and his staff are anticipating a high volume of use for the system’s unveiling.
